Call for Abstracts

We are pleased to announce the first joint conference between the Oregon Lakes Association (OLA) and the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Society of Freshwater Science (PNW SFS)

WHEN: Tues. Oct. 27 & Wed. Oct. 28, 2026 (potential field trips on Thurs. Oct. 29)

WHERE: Portland, OR at the University Place Hotel and Conference Center

We strongly encourage submissions from students and early career researchers.

Presentations should inform our understanding of at least one of the following:

Freshwater ecosystems
Watershed restoration
Management of waterbodies and waterways
Climate change and aquatic systems
Water quality
Ecosystem processes
Aquatic invasive species
Fisheries management
Eutrophication and harmful algal blooms
Freshwater bioassessment

Your submission must include:

A presentation title
Author(s), noting student authors
Preference of an oral or poster presentation
Abstract of <500 words

To be considered fully by the conference committee, abstracts must include:

Problem statement/goals and objectives
Geographic area of study
Brief description of methods
Results
Conclusions/implications

Applications are available for a PNW SFS Student Assistance Award (graduate or undergraduate; 2 awards) that includes conference registration and 2 nights lodging at the conference hotel. PNW SFS applications are due Sept. 2, 2026.

We are pleased to announce the first joint conference between the Oregon Lakes Association (OLA) and the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Society of Freshwater Science (PNW SFS) on October 27-29, 2026, in Portland, Oregon. The intent of the joint conference is to advance the understanding and practice of freshwater science in the Pacific Northwest and foster connections among practitioners. This regional meeting is open to scientists, regulators, consultants, and students alike.

The meeting will support both in-person (highly encouraged) and virtual attendees. If interested, you are also invited to submit an abstract for an individual presentation (due Sep 2). Presentations should inform our understanding and management of freshwater ecosystems including lakes, rivers, streams, and wetlands in the Pacific Northwest. On Tuesday evening we will hold a social (appetizers and drinks provided) that will include a poster session, raffle, silent auction, student awards, and sponsor recognition. Thursday morning there is an optional three hour field trip to Johnson and Kellogg Creeks in Southeast Portland/Milwaukee hosted by the Johnson Creek and North Clackamas Watershed Councils (no cost to attend, except public transportation fees if applicable).

Conference Registration Includes:

Tuesday and Wednesday: two full days of conference proceedings, with mid-morning/afternoon breaks for snacks, tea, and coffee
Tuesday night: Social at University Place: poster session, raffle, silent auction, student awards, and sponsor recognition. Drink tickets and light appetizers provided
Optional Field Trip on Thursday: tour of Johnson & Kellogg Creeks restoration projects hosted by the Johnson Creek and North Clackamas Watershed Councils.

Convention Lodging - Important Details

The University Place Hotel has a block rate of $90 plus tax (16%) per night. The block rate is for October 26-29, and reservations need to be made by 10/12/26 for the block rate. Guests have to call the hotel directly at 503-221-0140 to make reservations under the name “Oregon Lakes Association”.
